Even though I have had RA all my childhood and so have had all my babies with RA, I am in a slight whirl about what to do...
My Rheumy has advised that at 28 weeks pregnant (I am 27!) I should return back onto SLZ and Hydro!! I was SO astounded by this piece of advice that I didn't tell him that my RA had not returned quickly except with my first born, Ben. In fact after Ben, I had NO RA for all the other four babies until my last baby was 11 months old when it returned in a most violent manner and wrecked my life.
I have already decided I am not taking this advice- why risk that when I may have reprieve again? But I am worried, this is a high risk pregnancy (for other reasons- stated in the blog etc) so I want/need to be overly precautious and filling my body whilst still pregnant with dangerous and toxic medicines isn't appealing!
What would you do if you were me? (I sound like a Dr Suess book now!) LOL

I cannot believe you are now 27 weeks pregnant. Where has the time gone?
It is a difficult situation about the drugs. I can only suggest that you go with what you think is best. After all there is only you who knows your own body. It's not as if you have not been through this before. I think you are worried enough about this pregnancy without the added worry of taking or not taking drugs. Could your obstetrician give you advice on what affect this may have on the baby?

Amanda, does he say why he feels this needs to be done?? Also why at 28 weeks, what is special about that number?? Sorry I dont mean to belittle the situation, I just dont get why. It is a high risk pregnancy, we know that, but its you who needs to decide what is best. If you dont go on the drugs, what does he believe will happen? Sorry, too many questions!! You are a very sensible person, and will do what is right for you and your baby x x x  BARBARA

Speaking from my own personal viewpoint, I think I would be tempted to not take him up on his offer. As you say, why pump these things into yourself if you don't need them right now? The way I feel is that if you DO need to start these drugs again then the longer you can wait the better. But that is just me and I'm not in your position. YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.

Hi Amanda,
It's my guess that he's trying to get you onto the drugs in time for them to have kicked in by the time you give birth, and at 28 weeks the baby is fully formed.
BUT....it's your body and your choice. You know what has worked for you before and I can well understand you not wanting to take the drugs while you are pregnant.
Only you can decide and I'm sure whatever choice you make will be the right one for you and your baby.

Thank you! I guess it will come down to how I feel instinctively- which is not to tamper with any drugs whilst expecting.
Doreen is correct- 28 weeks was a date he chose because it allows the meds to begin to work and also the baby is completely formed (well babies are formed from 11 weeks gestation but you know what I mean!) and it was to arm me with the possible huge flare once the baby has been born.
My idea was he would offer me a large steroid jab after the birth should I flare/get the RA crawling back, which I have done with Ben. I then could restart the meds with the steroid hopefully working to dampen the inflammation.
The Obs actually said to me she thinks it's up to me and if I am feeling very well still by 28 weeks then I should re-think his suggestion, so i was glad she seemed supportive to my decision and not pro-drug taking!
I don't want to be irresponsible yet I cannot help but feel taking them is the wrong action to take.....

Hi amanda, thats a really tough one. I think you should go with your gut reaction, its your body, your baby, you know your history better than most. Are there any documented cases of women taking these drugs at this time of pregnancy and if so what are their stories?

Hi Amanda Eek .... don't do it!!!! You know what's right for you, go with the instincts! There's erring on the side of caution and plain stupidity. Who on earth would want a belly full of toxic drugs when carrying such a precious little gift? Rheumy needs head examining! Crikey you're already high risk so why add to that? I dont know much on this area but wonder about the RA coming back with a vengence after birth. Are these type flares like a tsunami, large and short or very prolonged. Or does it all just depend and as you were quite lucky last time. However, Sulph and hdyro are not toxic like methx. Though drugs are drugs that carry their own price. Its a toughie, lots to weigh up, though I am sure you will come to the right decision.

Well, i have reached 28 weeks- 7 whole months pregnant- YEH!! and not one single pill in sight!
I am praying my GP will NOT ring but I have a deep feeling he will! I will inform him we have decided not to medicate myself and the baby for now!
Just 7 more weeks and hopefully i will be safely ensconced in hospital..................with my storage of wine/champagne/naughty treats prepared..

Hi, I stayed on Sulphasazine throughout my pregnancy with Oisin, and tbh it made diddlysquat difference once he was born - I had a flair about 3 weeks after and had to have steroid injections anyway, plus they started me on MTX in October - Osh was born end of June.
So, I don't think you are actually gaining anything by taking the meds whilst pregnant, imo.
Good luck for the next 10 weeks - not long now!

Amanda, I agree you are definitely making the right choice. Why use meds now??? you have come this far without, and done amazingly well. So soon you will be holding your new born!! how exciting!! you be assertive, its you and your baby that count. Lots of love x xBARBARA
